The Iranian representative came to pay a courtesy visit, and thanked me for what I did in connection with the oil dispute. When I remarked that at the time his government did not like what I said, he said the members of the permanent delegation thought I was both fair and wise.
Talked with Chang-huan 【沈昌煥] over the phone and arranged for weekend entertainment.
Lunch with Gen. Ho 【何世禮]. He leaves in a day for Hong Kong. Told him about 孫立人 case. At first, he misunderstood the phrase 免職. He thought Sun would have the three stars taken from him. When I explained 免職 to mean loss of job as chief military aide, he felt better. He did not believe Sun could be disloyal. Told him that I too found it hard to believe, but I could not ignore the fact that Sun was very ambitious and had somehow come to believe that he (Sun) and he alone could save China. Ho readily admitted Sun’s egotism. In the end, I advised him to keep his mind open and his mouth shut.
