Morning, office. Dictated a statement for use in case Soviets should try to challenge my delegation’s right to be in the U.N.
Invited Cadogan and wife to dinner in Hidden House; Hu Shih 【胡適] and Hilda 【沈恩欽] were there. Talked mainly about poetry.
Afternoon, Security Council. 2 hours debating whether the U.N. should pay for services of military observers; Soviets causing all the trouble.
Evening, with K. C. Li 【李國欽] in Downtown Athletic Club. Hu Shih, Liu Chieh 【劉鍇], James Yu 【于焌吉], Pei Tsu-yee 【貝祖詒], T. Y. Lee 【李德燏], etc. K. C., fresh from China, is very pessimistic and thinks only of doing business, even with the commies.
