Plane landed at Luliang 【陸良], 90 miles east of Kunming, at 7. a.m., having been in the air for 9 hours and then unable to land in Kunming, due to bad weather. Had breakfast; then was told to get on. The plane took off at 11 and arrived at 11:45, finally. Lunch in the mess, hoping to get off by 1:30 p.m. plane. Was told the flight was cancelled. Got billeting in a barrack for privates. Tried to secure some transportation into the city; for the first time, I begged: but to no avail. Major Cartwright simply gave me the cold shoulder. Finally, C. M. 【李卓敏] suggested that we go to the terminal again to inquire about planes. There met F. T. Ching 【陳福田], who took us and our baggage into Hotel No. 1. Thanks for such a good Samaritan. After supper, found Erh Pao 【蔣壽仁] and got her to my room. I spread before her my purchases for her and Da Pao 【蔣智仁], and let her choose what she wanted. She told me with pride what good grades she had last year.
