Cabinet in the morning. Afterwards, had a talk with Chen Cheng 【陳誠]. Asked about facilities in Kweichow for relief. He said he welcomed any effort in that direction but could hold out no hopes in regard to transport or to food. About the time of landings on the coast, he had nothing to say. After lunch, went back to the office at 1:30: read the dispatch pouch from Washington. Had dispatches sent to various ministries for 6-month period break-down of UNRRA 【聯合國善後救濟總署] supplies. At 3:15, returned home to meet with NHA 【衛生署] group. Went over the whole program of health, both emergency and post-war relief. I stressed again and again that the objective is epidemic prevention and illnesses of the common people, and not scientific research or specialization on rare diseases. Again, the bottleneck is transport. The conference did not get over till 5:30. By then, I was thoroughly tired. Took Sze Pao 【蔣居仁] to the high terrace to watch the river, and then to listen to BBC broadcasting one of Mozart’s symphonies. Evening, at home: three-handed bridge.
