Fine continuous rain all day. Went to see the new house near the parachute grounds: very flimsy. Played a game of chess with Sze Pao 【蔣居仁]. After lunch, nap. D. K. Lieu 【劉大鈞] came: asked for an opportunity to go abroad, which I could not procure for him. Played bridge with wife and children. After supper, again. But Sze Pao felt outraged by his mother who made some stupid mistake. The game had to be discontinued. It is queer how serious children are at games. It is also queer how people without a knack for card games can not profit by experience.
劉愷鍾,【1】 who is now a commissioner in Shensi, came. He was full of anger against the officers, who, according to him, all get rich by selling soldiers’ rice. A brigadier has at least twenty million. The other day, in talking about Kwangsi’s poor showing in this war, Chiu邱毅吾【昌渭], remarked that the military in getting rich set no limit.
