Rose at 7 a.m. At 8:05, began lecturing to the trainees for Formosan administration on “Political Questions of the Pacific.” First hour did not go well, in spite or rather because of the fact that I had written out the lecture: it was too solid, assumed too much knowledge on the part of the trainees. In the second hour, I corrected myself, and the stuff got more interest. At 10, went to the office. A secretary brought me the opinions of Ku 【谷正綱] and Wong 【翁文灝] on my prepared statute of organization: Ku hammering on jurisdiction, whereas Wong, to my great surprise, criticized my nomenclature, wishing me to follow his pattern in War Production Board 【戰時生產局]. He betrayed his smallness. I was incensed by his criticism. For some time, I thought I would hand in my resignation and wash my hands of the whole business. Later, I felt that if I should retreat before any and every difficulty, how could I achieve anything in politics? Who in politics has his rice cooked for him? Made up my mind to struggle through all difficulties. Wrote out my scheme for training of personnel. Evening, T. L. Wang 【王祖廉] came to talk about politics. He said he would organize Tsing Hua 【清華] alumni to back me up. I did not indicate my opinion one way or the other. Up to the present, I have relied on the general approval of the intellectual class as a whole. I would like to be their spokesman in politics.
